Weddings, Vow Renewals & Blessings
Are you thinking about a religious wedding ceremony in a beautiful setting? The Ministry Team at Greyfriars Kirk is available to any couple who wish to have a Christian wedding service to celebrate their wedding. We also are happy to conduct services to renew marriage vows or arrange a blessing service if you have been married elsewhere.
If you are interested in getting married at Greyfriars, please see our wedding booklet for more information- it contains an outline of what you can expect from us, what services we provide, and a pricing details.
Please contact the office via email@example.com — ideally with a completed Provisional Booking Form, giving an outline of any possible dates you have in mind. As part of the booking process, a deposit would be due and our minister would wish to meet both the bride and the groom beforehand. This can be done face-to-face or by conference call. You are also welcome to ask a minister, not employed at the Kirk, to conduct the wedding service.
Despite being an Affirming Congregation, we regret that we are not authorised to conduct same-sex marriages, as the Church of Scotland has not approved its ministers doing so. We are able to provide you advice on alternative arrangements. Please note the Kirk is not licenced for civil partnership ceremonies.
Although the Kirk is also available for wedding receptions, we regret that we cannot hold your wedding ceremony and reception on the same day.
As a parish church, our minister at Greyfriars Kirk is available to conduct funeral services for the departed. Arrangements for funerals at the Kirk are usually made by a funeral director and a member of the deceased’s family, however we are happy to receive enquiries direct to check on availably for a preferred date. For funerals taking place within the Kirk, a charge made for the use of the facilities, staff and organist. Indicative charges are here. The Kirk does not charge for the services of a minister of the Church of Scotland and you are welcome to invite a minister of your choosing (who perhaps knows the family) to conduct the service if you wish.
Celebration of Life and Memorial Services
The Kirk is a beautiful and atmospheric setting to remember and celebrate the lives of those who have passed on. We can arrange large or intimate settings for family and friends. One of our ministers can conduct a traditional service format or you are welcome to arrange a bespoke service and we can advise about the content. As well as an organ and grand piano, we also have a modern audio video suite and sound system to incorporate visual clips, and music content of your choice. The Kirk is also has Wi-Fi and live streaming is possible. There is a charge for hiring the Kirk and details can be found here. Following the service, the Kirk can be made available for refreshments. Please contact the Kirk office for information; we are available always open to having a conversation about helping people to mark and give thanks for the lives of their loved ones.
The gift of a new child is always a moment of celebration and gratitude and a profound responsibility. The ministry team at Greyfriars are always happy to discuss the possibility of baptism, as a sign of our desire to nurture our children in the light of faith. Baptism normally takes place at a Sunday service, and there is no charge for this.
Greyfriars Kirk has strong ties with the Edinburgh community with links to a number of organisations and alumni. We are very happy to offer the Kirk for one-off or regular school/university services, trades associations and civic bodies.
There is a strong connection between Greyfriars Kirk and the adjacent George Heriot’s School – indeed, one of their school’s houses is named “Greyfriars”. We are pleased to host primary and secondary pupils several times a year for their school services.
Nurturing our links with the Gaelic speaking community, we are also very pleased to host the annual Christmas service for the city’s Gaelic primary school, Bun-sgoil Taobh na Pàirce.
Annual Pets’ Blessing Service
Our annual Pet Blessing service is one of our most popular events of the year! Coinciding with the feast day of Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of animals on 4 October, the informal service is held on the nearest Sunday afternoon. The Kirk opens up its doors to those of a furry, feathered or fluffy persuasion, for a short service of thanks and blessing for the animals in our lives – how they enhance our days, how they give so much and ask so little, and how they love unconditionally. Children are most welcome too!
The service has special significance due to Greyfriars Bobby’s association with the Kirkyard where the dog and his owner, Auld Jock, are buried. The Skye Terrier Club also feature prominently with a large number of this rare breed assembling. Following the service, a pet parade gathers outside for a walk around the Kirkyard before pet owners (and their pets) enjoy refreshments afterwards.
Please consider whether your pet would be comfortable in a busy (and noisy!) environment before attending; we do require all animals to be on a lead or in a carrier of some kind.
The 2021 Pet Blessing Service will be Sunday 3 October at 3pm.
