VOLUNTEER WITH US: WE’RE LOOKING FOR NEW WELCOMERS
Greyfriars Kirk has been welcoming visitors from all over the world since we opened our doors in 1620.
On average, we welcome 50,000 visitors a year who come to explore the building and the surrounding kirkyard for a number of reasons. From the signing of the Covenant and our place in Scotland’s history, to Edinburgh’s most beloved dog, Bobby and our connection to the Harry Potter franchise, there is something here for everyone!
As we approach peak tourist season, we’re looking to find new Welcomers to join our team. Welcomers greet and interact with visitors and ensure their experience with us is unique and memorable.
Essentially, your job as a Welcomer is to make them feel welcome!
You will welcome them with a smile and initiate a friendly conversation with them so we can best personalise their visit. You will invite them to look around the Kirk and encourage their questions if they are unsure of anything.
Although admission is free at the main entrance, you will invite them to make a donation. Over time you will learn about the Kirk’s long history and answer questions about the building or the human history associated with Kirk and Kirkyard. Invariably questions have been asked before and you will be able to take reference from fellow Welcomers, a Welcomers ‘bible’ or any of our reference books.
This is an ideal opportunity for someone who:
- Enjoys making new connections
- Is interested in history
- Is confident chatting and interacting with new people
- Wants to share Edinburgh’s stories
If this sounds like you, or someone you know, you can find out more about becoming a Welcomer and how to apply, please follow this link: https://volunteergreyfriars.com/home/2019/1/25/volunteer-welcomer
If you have any questions or would like more information, please contact our Communications Coordinator, Ellen: communications@greyfriarskirk.com or call 0131 225 1900.
There are many benefits to volunteering. Whether you’re looking for experience to add to your CV, pursue your interests, or simply just try something new in your free time, it’s always a good time for personal growth.
