Dumfries-based chamber choir The Balliol Singers, founded in 1992, present a tribute programme to Edinburgh composer Tom Cunningham, who died from motor neurone disease last year and who is perhaps best known for his 20-year collaboration with best-selling novelist Sir Alexander McCall Smith.
Their penultimate work together was “Ninian’s gift”, effectively a short cantata about the lives of the early Scottish saints, composed during the Covid-19 lockdown, and this is the principal item on the choir’s programme. They also include numbers from all of Tom and Sandy’s other part-song cycles: ‘Scotland at Night’, ‘The Painter’s Eye’, ‘A Time of Gifts’, and ‘Incredible Beasties’, while interspersed with these will be a 14th century Scottish plainsong hymn, 16th century David Peebles’s motet ‘Si quis diligit me’, and Sir James MacMillan’s modern classic ‘O radiant dawn’.
