Preceding this famous ode is Sir John Clerk of Penicuik’s cantata, Leo Scotiae irritatus from c.1700. This Cantata for solo soprano and orchestra depicts Scotland’s ambitions (and unsuccessful) venture to set up an empire in Panama.
