Karlakór Kópavogs is a vibrant and accomplished Icelandic male choir that has grown and flourished in recent years. Founded in 2002, the choir has performed numerous concerts and taken part in a wide range of cultural events, theatre productions, and more.
The choir’s conductor is Sigurður Helgi, who holds formal training in jazz piano performance, conducting, and film scoring from Berklee College of Music in Boston.
The choir’s pianist is Hrönn Þráinsdóttir, who completed advanced studies in piano performance at the Staatliche Hochschule für Musik in Freiburg, Germany.
The featured soloist with the choir is Bjarni Atlason, a baritone singer.
This concert program brings together a rich and diverse selection of songs from various musical traditions and eras. Audiences are taken on a journey from folk melodies to classical art songs, Nordic compositions, and well‑known musical numbers.
The repertoire includes dramatic works like the Icelandic masterpieces Burn Ye Beacons by Páll Ísólfsson and Final Chorus from Þrymskviða by Jón Ásgeirsson, heartfelt romantic songs such as Plaisir d‘amour by Martini and Serenade by Romberg, as well as lively and stirring selections like March of the Singers by A. W. Andersen and The Gallop by Iceland‘s first professional composer, Sveinbjörn Sveinbjörnsson, who lived and worked in Edinburgh for the majority of his life.
The variety of styles — from Icelandic folk arrangements to russian romances, operetta excerpts, and musical theatre — creates a vibrant and engaging evening of music. Each piece highlights different emotional colours, showcasing both lyrical beauty and powerful storytelling.
