The Orchard Project will be visiting Greyfriars Kirkyard on Sunday 24 March at noon. The session is open to everyone, and we hope that members of the community enjoying the Kirkyard will come along, enjoy a cup of tea or juice, meet the Orchard Project, and learn about orchard tree care. We will be outside, so please bring warm clothes or layers suited to the weather and your needs.
In 2020 Greyfriars Kirk took part in a project run by the Church of Scotland, Ecocongregation Scotland and The Orchard Project, that followed the example of churches in Hungary to encourage orchards in churchyards and gardens. The planting at Greyfriars was part of its programme celebrating 400 years since it opened its doors in 1620. The four apple and two pear trees were planted before the lockdowns due to Covid. Through that difficult year the trees provided a wee highlight for some involved, who visited and watered the trees during their daily exercise. The trees continued to be a lovely addition to the Kirkyard and are cared for with the help of the Council of Edinburgh green spaces team.
